According to Google, students in Nigeria are increasingly depending on AI for assistance.
On Tuesday, Google Search trend data revealed that, as schools reopen throughout Nigeria, students are turning to artificial intelligence with increasing frequency to aid in their studies.
Google reported a significant increase of over 200 percent in searches that combine “AI + studying” compared to 2024. This indicates that learners are not just interested in AI, but are actively incorporating it as a study partner.
The company noted that students are looking for AI-based tutors, complimentary tools, and prompts to help them across various subjects.
The data showed a 50% increase in searches for “AI + chemistry.” Meanwhile, searches for “AI + maths” and “AI + languages” both saw a 30% rise, and there was a 20% increase in searches connecting AI with grammar.
Google noted that some of the frequently searched queries were Which AI is the most effective for tackling mathematical challenges? and How can AI be used to address math problems?
Olumide Balogun, Google’s Director for West Africa, noted that students are increasingly adopting AI to enhance their educational experience.
Balogun mentioned that Nigerian students are leveraging AI not merely to find answers but as an instrument to enhance their comprehension of challenging topics, including chemistry and mathematics.
He emphasized the company’s dedication to offering resources designed to enable students to learn, develop, and achieve success.
Google observed that the curiosity about AI extends beyond academic tasks. Searches like “how to use AI” and “what does AI stand for” each grew by 80 percent, whereas “who is considered the father of AI” saw a 70 percent increase.
