“This convocation is particularly special because we are still in the celebration mood of our 50th Anniversary, which we marked with pomp and pride in November last year.”
Fifty years ago, this university started with just 200 students and a handful of staff on a temporary site. Today, by the grace of God, we have grown to become one of the most sought-after universities in Nigeria, with over 50,000 students and a global reputation for stability and excellence.”
“In particular, I am excited by the sustained intervention of TETFund in infrastructure and research, as well as the historic Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which has brought great relief to thousands of our students. I also commend the Staff Welfare and Housing Loan Schemes, and, most importantly, the new harmonious relationship with the staff unions, ASUU, SSANU, NASU and NAAT, which has ensured that, for almost two years now, the academic calendar of the nation’s tertiary institutions has not been disrupted by any strike action.”
“While I commend the government on these scores, I also wish to make a humble appeal, Research is the engine of development. No nation can develop beyond the level of research conducted in its universities.”
“I therefore appeal to the federal government to increase the quantum of funding for research in our tertiary institutions, particularly for problem-solving and demand-driven research.”
Earlier, at the day one of the convocation, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Wahab Egbewole, in an address titled “Let This Investment Count,” expressed commendation to those who contributed to ensure success in the educational pursuit of the gradunds.
At the day two of the ceremony with the Theme ” what Next” Professor Egbewole declared “As you leave the gates of this great institution, you carry the name and reputation of the university of Ilorin with you. You are now the ambassadors, our valued alumni, and an enduring part of our institutional legacy. “
The Vice Chancellor enjoined the graduands to maintain their academic excellence, adding that their education has provided them academic qualifications and professional competence as they step out to the world.
Professor Egbewole reiterated his words again, ” What next?” Hear him ” what next is for you to step confidently into the world and demonstrate that you possess three essential attributes: certification, competence, and character. ” Adding” Go out and apply the knowledge you have acquired. Use your skills to solve problems, create opportunities, generate employment, and contribute to the development of our Nation”.
He said the number of graduates indicates the dedication of the students in all aspects. charged the graduates to preserve the parental guidance, institutional investment, and their self investment put in during their academic pursuit.
A total of about 16,150 graduated from various faculties, while 365 undergraduates graduated with first class in the 2025/ 26 academic session.
